Celebrating
the Birth Anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan
12
August is
celebrated in India as National Librarian’s Day to commemorate
the birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, popularly known as
the Father of Library Science in India.
Dr. S.
R. Ranganathan was born on 12 August 1892. His remarkable
contribution to library science, classification, cataloguing, library education
and the development of libraries in India continues to inspire librarians and
readers even today.
🌟 Dr. S. R. Ranganathan
Dr. S.
R. Ranganathan played a pioneering role in developing modern library science in
India. His famous work “The Five Laws of Library Science”,
published in 1931, provided a simple but powerful philosophy for libraries.
📖 The Five Laws of Library
Science
1.
Books are for use.
Books
are meant to be read and used, not simply kept on shelves.
2.
Every reader his/her book.
Every
reader has different interests and information needs.
3.
Every book its reader.
Every
book has a reader who may benefit from it.
4.
Save the time of the reader.
Library
services should help readers find the information they need quickly.
5.
Library is a growing organism.
A
library continuously grows and changes according to the needs of its users and
society.
These
five laws remain relevant even in today's digital library environment.
